Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway
The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, the railway that journeys through 7 miles of ever changing, gorgeous scenery from the sleepy setting of the only coastal village in the National Park, Ravenglass, to the rugged foothills at the head of the Eskdale Valley and the foot of England’s highest mountains, the Scafells.
The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway is the oldest and longest narrow gauge railway in the Lake District, known affectionately as La’al Ratty meaning “ little railway “. Take a journey behind our heritage steam engines, some dating back to 1894, and enjoy the nostalgia of steam in Lakeland.
These narrow gauge steam engines take you to the hills with a 1 in 55 gradient at points from the only coastal village in the National Park, Ravenglass, once a bustling port and of great significance in Roman times.
Ravenglass is widely regarded as the most southerly point in the unique defensive system developed in the days of Emperor Hadrian.
There is something for everyone, with our cafe serving home made treats and gift shop with plenty of trails and walks to explore in this beautiful corner of the Lake District National Park.
Take a step back in time and get hands on in the Railway Museum. Owned by the Railway Museum Trust, entry is free but donations help to preserve history.
AA brand new event this Summer from the Ravenglass Railway Museum. Every Tuesday during our yellow timetable service you can become a steam engine driver for just £5. We are running short driver experiences outside our workshop every 15 minutes giving you the opportunity to drive our engine,
Affectionately known as the Ratty railway its a great day out for all the family.
